City History

New Hope began as a primarily agricultural community in Crystal Lake Township. As residential developments expanded in the area, there was a movement to incorporate the township, and in 1936 the City of Crystal was formed. The rural residents of the former Crystal Lake Township were not supportive of the incorporation and decided to form a township of their own – New Hope. New Hope did not remain a township for long, however, and by 1953 was incorporated into the city it is today. Between 1953 and 1958 the population grew from 600 to 2,500, a growth trend that peaked in 1971 at 24,000 residents. Though the population has declined slightly since then, the city of New Hope is still as vibrant as ever.
